The Problem

Beating the Big Three

There were three main problems we needed to beat:

   Income bypassing is when a user hovers over a link, sees where the link is pointed, and then types the website into the browser. This was frustrating because we did all the work of getting that customer to go to the affiliate’s website, but we didn’t get credit for referring the customer.
2. Income Hijacking.
   Unlike income bypassing, income hijacking is when a customer decided to replace our affiliate referral code with their own. This is basically stealing. And it was a big problem for us.
3. Spyware Rewriting.
   Even more troublesome was spyware rewriting. Some spyware programs that people accidentally downloaded onto their computers would track the links that they were clicking. When the spyware recognized an affiliate code embedded in a link, it automatically rewrote that affiliate code so that the author of the spyware program received the commission, not us. The severity of this problem has been increasing in recent years, and we needed a link cloaking solution to beat spyware rewrites.

While people have tried to estimate how widespread these four threats are, we found no reliable way of tracking them. Estimates are that between 10% and 40% of affiliate income is lost due to any combination of these four threats.
